Polymers for Photovoltaics: Ensuring Module Reliability via Proper Material Testing

Introduction

Dr. Gernot Oreski of the Polymer Competence Center Leoben GmBH, presented a talk at PerkinElmer’s Global Environmental Sciences Summit focused on his work with polymers for photovoltaics (PV). The most prominent mechanisms of failure in PVs are linked to the use of polymeric encapsulation materials, something that has generally been underestimated. Design matching of components and materials may reduce degradation rates and Dr. Oreski reviews this concept along with the need for more thorough testing to better understand long term material behavior. The development of this additional information will provide a better understanding of the degradation process and lead to the successful development of more reliable PV module.
