Introduction
Plastics are increasingly used in both consumer goods and industrial applications. To support proper recycling, the Society of the Plastics Industry developed the Plastics Identification Code (PIC), a standardized system for classifying different polymer types and enabling recycling facilities to separate materials for reprocessing. Accurate identification and sorting are essential for successful recycling. Many facilities still depend on the expertise of seasoned workers to recognize various plastics, but optical spectroscopic methods provide a precise, scientific alternative. Molecular spectroscopy offers rapid and straightforward analysis for distinguishing plastic types, and both mid‑infrared and near‑infrared instruments can be effectively used for examining samples of many different shapes and sizes
