NIR Spectroscopy is a useful technique throughout various stages of the manufacturing process but is particularly useful for raw materials identification and verification. If the materials to be identified are spectroscopically dissimilar, it is often only necessary to use a simple distance measure such as a spectral difference for identification. If the spectra are similar, on the other hand, it may be necessary to use more sophisticated techniques which take into consideration both the intra- and inter-material spectral variation for identification and classification.
The analysis of all incoming pharmaceuticalraw materials is a key part of 21CFR compliance (section 211.84). It is therefore important to have a high-throughput method by which raw materials may be analysed in a loading bay or warehouse, while also preventing sample exposure.
Quinoa flour is a high-value product and, therefore, susceptible to adulteration with lower-value flours. Fourier Transform Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-NIR) provides a quick and easy method to determine the identity and concentration of any adulterants present in quinoa flour.
Avocado oil, a high-value product, may be adulterated with lower-value oils in order to increase profit margins. These adulterant oils may include nut-containing oils which may induce a dangerous allergic reaction for consumers with nut allergies. This works shows how near-infrared spectroscopy with a HTM accessory can provide accurate detection and identification of adulterant oils in avocado oil. Tthe Adulterant Screen algorithm rapidly identifieds the adulterant present and provides a relatively accurate estimate of the adulterant concentration.
During the frying process, palm oil undergoes a series of degradation reactions, caused by heat, water and air, which results in oxidation of the oil and can ultimately reduce the quality of the oil and cause adverse health effects for consumers. The extent of oxidation in the oil can be assessed by determining the peroxide value (PV). Generally, the lower the PV, the higher the quality of the oil but very rancid oils, with high levels of oxidation, may have a reduced PV due to peroxides decomposing to form aldehydes and other secondary oxidation products. The acid value (AV) measures how many fatty acids have been cleaved from their parent molecule due to hydrolysis, which may result from the oxidation of the peroxides. Near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy is an already widely used technique in the food industry for quantitative analysis of nutritional and quality parameters. Chemometric techniques, such as partial least squares (PLS), used in conjunction with NIR spectroscopy offers an alternative rapid and non-destructive method to the wet chemistry reference methods for the analysis of crude palm oil (CPO), with multiple property values being determined simultaneously.
This work shows an on-site, rapid and low-cost technique for the accurate measurement of flower potency. FT-NIR spectroscopy provides rich information regarding the chemical composition of cannabis flower. When combined with chemometrics, the FT-NIR offers unparalleled speed and simplicity that cannot be matched by traditional techniques. PerkinElmer Spectrum Two NIR with the Near Infrared Reflectance Module (NIRM) is used to quantify total THC and total CBD in dried cannabis flower. The use of FT-NIR directly at the grow site would reduce overall research and development costs for cultivators.
Herbal lifestyle products are widely used as alternatives to medicines around the world, with as many as 80% of people using them as a primary source of healthcare in developing countries. These treatments are commonly regarded by scientific papers, and on some occasions the media, as being inferior to orthodox treatment. This is due to the variation between herbal formulations which will not be present in so called ‘single-chemical’ drugs. The reasons for the aforementioned variation involve several factors including storage, environmental conditions, handling and unintentional or intentional contamination (adulteration).
The exact number of counterfeit medicines produced/consumed each year is difficult to determine due to the usually illegitimate methods by which they are distributed. However, the scale of the problem can be represented by the fact that 20 million pills, bottles, and sachets of counterfeit medicines were seized in a five-month operation conducted by the International Criminal Police Organization in China and South-East Asia.
Near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy is an important technique for materials checking at various stages of the manufacturing process, but is particularly useful at the raw materials inspection stage. Raw materials come in a variety of physical forms including liquids, gels, and solids, requiring a versatile instrument with convenient, interchangeable sampling modules to cater to the entire range of raw materials encountered.
Quality and consistency of medicines is critical to ensuring their identity, strength, and purity is at a safe level for human consumption.

Infrared (IR) and near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy are fast, easy-to-use techniques with a history of being used for food applications such as those for measuring protein, moisture, and fat content. Food fraud and adulteration has become of particular concern to the industry over the past few years following reports of incidents in the media, with herbs and spices identified as one of the key problem areas.
The FDA defines data integrity as “completeness, consistency, and accuracy of data. Complete, consistent, and accurate data should be attributable, legible, contemporaneously recorded, original or a true copy, and accurate (ALCOA)”. ALCOA itself has evolved to ALCOA Plus, which incorporates two of the fundamental definition terms as stated by the FDA; complete, consistent, enduring, and available. Compliance with 21 CFR Part 11 is mandatory for pharmaceutical companies and their suppliers to sell products into the United States, and also applies to other related industries.
PerkinElmer’s Spectrum™ 10 Enhanced Security (ES) software platform for infrared spectroscopy provides structural requirements and features to assist with the needs for ensuring data integrity and compliance. It affords the system owner the ability to comply with regulations and incorporate features into the validation plan to exhibit compliance. The purpose of this document is to demonstrate how Spectrum 10 ES meets the technical requirements for 21 CFR Part 11.
