Nitrofurans are antibiotics frequently used in animal production due to their highly efficient antibacterial properties. These drugs are also used as growth promoters during the production of shrimp, poultry, pigs, and others. However, the parent compounds and their metabolites have been shown to have carcinogenic and mutagenic characteristics which led to the banning of nitrofurans for the treatment of animals used for food production.

ELISA for the Screening of Nitrofurazone Residues.
The MaxSignal® Nitrofurazone (SEM) ELISA Kit provides a competitive enzyme immunoassay for the quantitative analysis of nitrofurazone in a variety of sample types. It is based on a competitive colorimetric ELISA assay. SEM antibody has been coated in the plate wells. During the analysis, sample is added along with the SEM-horseradish peroxidase (SEM-HRP) conjugate. If the SEM residue is present in the sample, it will compete for the SEM antibody, thereby preventing the SEM-HRP from binding to the antibody attached to the well. The resulting color intensity, after addition of the HRP substrate (TMB), has an inverse relationship with the SEM residue concentration in the sample.
