Overview

Rapid ELISA for the Screening of Crystal Violet/LCV

The MaxSignal Crystal Violet ELISA Test Kit is a one-step, competitive, colorimetric ELISA assay. The Crystal Violet (CV) antibody has been coated in the plate wells. During the analysis, sample is added along with the CV-horseradish peroxidase (CV-HRP) conjugate. If the CV residue is present in the sample, it will compete for the CV antibody, thereby preventing the CV-HRP from binding to the antibody attached to the well. The resulting color intensity, after addition of the HRP substrate (TMB), has an inverse relationship with the CV residue concentration in the sample. Crystal Violet has been widely used all over the world in the fish farming industry as a fungicide, ectoparasiticide and disinfectant. However, it has been shown recently that Crystal Violet is highly cytotoxic to mammalian cells and has been implicated in the induction of thyroid and liver tumors. This has led to a prohibition of Crystal Violet for the treatment of fish and shrimp used for food production.
