Food Safety & Quality

OF

Food is what nourishes, comforts, and sustains us – and it’s up to food testing laboratories to protect the quality and ensure the safety of an increasingly global food supply chain. What’s actually in our food products? Are our raw ingredients safe? Are our families getting the nutrition they need from the foods we put on the table? Answering these concerns requires labs that run more efficiently and are prepared to meet stringent, ever-changing regulations. From helping you develop and confirm certificates of analysis to conducting internal quality studies of raw, in-process, and finished products, to meet these goals is what our food safety and quality solutions are all about.

Organic Toxins

Mycotoxins, such as aflatoxins, in food are extremely harmful to both humans and animals. Persistent organic pollutants (POPs), like PAHs and dioxins, may contaminate the food supply through intentional and inadvertent chemical production. Once they enter the environment, these chemicals are known to contaminate food products through air or water. To ensure food safety you need to effectively test for these dangerous toxins.
PesticidesandResidues.jpg

Pesticides and Residues

Pesticides contaminate many foods – especially fruits and vegetables – during the growing season through soil, water, and air indirectly or directly. With residual levels regulated for human health and safety, short analytical turnaround times are critical to providing the necessary information required to make rapid decisions about food safely. For rapid screening of food matrices to detect the presence of pesticides residues, our chromatographic technologies are trusted throughout the industry.

    Ozone Precursor System

The analysis of C2 to C12 volatile organic ozone-precursor compounds can present a serious technical challenge to the analytical chemist. Low concentrations in the atmosphere coupled with the need to monitor frequently to assess diurnal variations means that a preconcentration step of the sample before analysis by thermal desorption is required. While the samples can be collected in the field and returned to the laboratory, remote, field-based analysis is desired which allows reduced data turnaround time, minimizes sample collection hardware and permits the presence or absence of VOCs to be correlated with meteorological data. In the field, low-molecular-weight C2 VOCs can be trapped on solid adsorbents if those adsorbents are cryogenically cooled.

Cavity-enhanced Absorption Spectroscopy for Trace Gas Detection with Frontier

Cavity-enhanced absorption spectroscopy (CEAS) has similarities with the better known cavity ringdown technique (CRDS) which measures the signal decay as a laser pulse emerges through one of the mirrors after successive reflections. By measuring the increase in the rate of decay caused by an absorbing species, CRDS can measure ppb concentrations of small molecules. The ringdown technique has typically been applied to small molecules where the wavelength of a NIR laser source can be tuned across very narrow individual lines of the spectra. In contrast this report describes CEAS using a broadband source applied to larger molecules where the spectra are broader.

Meeting the Challenges of Soil Analysis with the Avio 200 ICP-OES

The analysis of soils for elemental contents presents challenges during the sample preparation step. A common method for preparing a soil sample for inorganic elemental analysis involves digesting the soil sample in an acid that is heated to near-boiling to extract the elements for analysis. When using open vessels in heating blocks, this extraction method typically takes four hours or more to complete. The sample must then be centrifuged or filtered to remove solid particles prior to analysis. The use of a microwave digestion system can speed this up significantly by completing the acid digestion in less than 50 minutes.
