Food Safety & Quality

OF

Food is what nourishes, comforts, and sustains us – and it’s up to food testing laboratories to protect the quality and ensure the safety of an increasingly global food supply chain. What’s actually in our food products? Are our raw ingredients safe? Are our families getting the nutrition they need from the foods we put on the table? Answering these concerns requires labs that run more efficiently and are prepared to meet stringent, ever-changing regulations. From helping you develop and confirm certificates of analysis to conducting internal quality studies of raw, in-process, and finished products, to meet these goals is what our food safety and quality solutions are all about.

Organic Toxins

Mycotoxins, such as aflatoxins, in food are extremely harmful to both humans and animals. Persistent organic pollutants (POPs), like PAHs and dioxins, may contaminate the food supply through intentional and inadvertent chemical production. Once they enter the environment, these chemicals are known to contaminate food products through air or water. To ensure food safety you need to effectively test for these dangerous toxins.

Pesticides and Residues

Pesticides contaminate many foods – especially fruits and vegetables – during the growing season through soil, water, and air indirectly or directly. With residual levels regulated for human health and safety, short analytical turnaround times are critical to providing the necessary information required to make rapid decisions about food safely. For rapid screening of food matrices to detect the presence of pesticides residues, our chromatographic technologies are trusted throughout the industry.

Nutritional Analysis

For accurate analysis of the nutritional content in food products and compliance with labeling regulations, food producers around the world turn to analytical solutions from PerkinElmer and Perten (a PerkinElmer company).

Both organic components (such as protein) and inorganic components (such as iron and calcium) can be rapidly measured with our instrumentation. The extended dynamic range capabilities of our category-leading inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometers (ICP-MS) — providing nine orders of magnitude — are ideal for measuring macro-level nutritional elements such as Mg, K, and Na.

Our instruments help food companies ensure that ingredients meet Certificate of Analysis (COA) specifications, guaranteeing proper consistency and nutritional levels. They also support the confirmation of food label claims, making sure that the nutritional content in the food matches what is stated on the product label. Applications span a wide range from infant formula to highly-processed food products.

With precision measurement capability and rapid turnaround speeds, our analytical solutions are the preferred option for obtaining the nutritional information required in the food industry.

HeavyMetals
HeavyMetals

Heavy Metals

Detect and measure levels of heavy metals that may cause cancer, neurological issues and cardiovascular disease when consumed. We offer standard methods to:

  • Quantify the level of arsenic in baby foods and juices
  • Test for the presence of lead, mercury, and other dangerous metals in nutraceuticals
  • Screen for cadmium in farmed fish and aquaculture feeds
  • Meet regulatory requirements limiting nickel in all areas of the food and beverage industries

Our proven ICP-OES and ICP-MS instrumentation for heavy metal detection and analysis eliminates interferences between elements, allowing scientists to process more samples with greater speed while meeting regulated detection levels.

    QSight Pesticides Analyzer Brochure

Pesticides can adversely affect human health through the food we consume but can also leach into soil and groundwater and impact us through the environment. To keep up with a complex and constantly changing regulatory environment, your pesticide analysis solution needs to keep up with your burgeoning sample load.

    Clarus 590 and 690 Brochure

In today’s budget-constrained, yet highly competitive laboratory environments, the samples you’re being asked to analyze – whether food, pharmaceutical, petrochemical, or environmental – are increasingly difficult. But for some labs, having a dedicated GC for every application isn’t an option. For them, a GC that can do it all isn’t just a nice-to have, it’s a necessity

    Ozone Precursor System

The analysis of C2 to C12 volatile organic ozone-precursor compounds can present a serious technical challenge to the analytical chemist. Low concentrations in the atmosphere coupled with the need to monitor frequently to assess diurnal variations means that a preconcentration step of the sample before analysis by thermal desorption is required. While the samples can be collected in the field and returned to the laboratory, remote, field-based analysis is desired which allows reduced data turnaround time, minimizes sample collection hardware and permits the presence or absence of VOCs to be correlated with meteorological data. In the field, low-molecular-weight C2 VOCs can be trapped on solid adsorbents if those adsorbents are cryogenically cooled.

Ambient Air Monitoring - U.S. EPA PAMS

Air pollution is a global concern. Ground-level ozone has become an increasingly important issue in developed nations, as the health effects of smog are more clearly understood. The monitoring of VOC ozone precursor compounds will continue to play a role in defining and reducing air pollution in developed and developing nations in the next decade. The data presented here shows the excellent results of improved separation via Elite-624Sil MS column with real world samples, simplified column connections to the Dean Switching device and trap with modernized triple bed trap with guard zone technologies.

Discrimination of Herbal Lifestyle Products Using AssureID SIMCA and COMPARE Algorithms

Herbal lifestyle products are widely used as alternatives to medicines around the world, with as many as 80% of people using them as a primary source of healthcare in developing countries. These treatments are commonly regarded by scientific papers, and on some occasions the media, as being inferior to orthodox treatment. This is due to the variation between herbal formulations which will not be present in so called ‘single-chemical’ drugs. The reasons for the aforementioned variation involve several factors including storage, environmental conditions, handling and unintentional or intentional contamination (adulteration).

Residual Solvents in Pharmaceuticals by USP Chapter 467 Methodology

The synthesis of active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) may require multiple reaction steps that produce undesirable reaction byproducts or utilize various solvents that have to be removed from the finished product. These solvents and byproducts may be measured with headspace gas chromatography for those volatile residual organic solvents according to the USP chapter 467 method. Method USP 467 classifies residual solvents into three classes according to toxicity; class 1 solvents are to be avoided unless there is strong justification, class 2 solvents are those that should be limited due to toxicity concerns.

A novel method (TG-IR) for the rapid determination of Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH) in soil

A gas chromatographic analysis of the extract can provide even greater sensitivity and more detailed compositional information, but further increases the time required for the analysis. Thermogravimetric analysis coupled to infrared spectroscopy (TG-IR) can provide detailed information about the amount and nature of the pollution, while requiring no sample preparation at all. This application note illustrates the kind of data that can be obtained with a modern TG-IR system.
