Customer Spotlight: The Only Scientific Research Institution Dedicated to Salt Lake Research


The Qinghai Institute of Salt Lakes (ISL), the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) is located in Xining, the capital of Qinghai Province, China. ISL is the only scientific research institution dedicated to salt lake research in China. ISL stands on the forefront of the world’s salt lake science and technology, and faces the country’s strategic demand for agricultural potassium fertilizers, and high-end products of important raw materials such as lithium, boron, and magnesium.

The Qinghai Salt Lake Institute has exchanged and cooperated in research with universities, scientific research institutions and enterprises in the United States, Canada, Israel, Germany, New Zealand, Australia, Switzerland, Belgium, Russia, and many other countries. One such research cooperation is with PerkinElmer, in which the topic of "Building a Technical System for Green Development and Utilization of Lithium Resources" will be presented by Professor Wang Min of the ISL



What are main research areas of Qinghai Institute? 


The ISL has many research areas and laboratories, including the Salt Lake Geology and Environment Laboratory, Salt Lake Resources Chemistry Laboratory, and the Engineering Center for Comprehensive Utilization of Salt Lake Resources


The main research fields of the Salt Lake Geology and Environment Laboratory are resource exploration and evaluation, salt lake deposits and salt minerals, salt lake formation, evolution and distribution, salt forming conditions and metallogenic prediction, salt lake isotope geochemistry, isotope mass spectrometry and atomic weight determination, and salt lake brine hydrogeochemistry.


The Salt Lake Resources Chemistry Laboratory is focused on the Water-salt system and phase equilibrium, thermodynamics of aqueous solution, evaporative crystallization of brine, structural chemistry of water-salt solution, salt lake separation method and technology, phase change energy storage Materials, Lithium battery materials, and Magnesium alloy materials.


The Engineering Center for Comprehensive Utilization of Salt Lake Resources mainly researches the development of low-grade potassium ore, lithium extraction by electrodialysis, magnesium hydroxide flame retardant, new magnesium building materials, extraction separation of lithium and boron, whisker and composite materials, and strontium functional materials.


What aspects of application development and/or research have been done using PerkinElmer instruments?


Our institute utilizes the PerkinElmer ICP-MS and ICP-OES and have performed full analysis of trace elements in salt, minerals, brine, battery grade lithium carbonate, lithium chloride, and other chemical products.
