Overview

Complement component 1q, also known as C1q, is a protein complex involved in the complement system. C1q senses antigen/antibody complexes formed with IgG or IgM and binds to antibody Fc via its globular heads. When this occurs, intramolecular rearrangement of the C1 complex is induced, triggering the activation of C1r and C1s proteases and the sequential cleavage of the circulating complement proteins. This leads to the formation of the Membrane Attack Complex (MAC) and to cell lysis. C1q binding measurements are related to the mechanism of action and Fc effector functions of biologics and therapeutic antibodies and utilized for studies in oncology, autoimmune disease, neurology, and infectious disease.

Application Brief

Eight Limitations of ELISA and How to Overcome Them Using Alternative Technologies

The introduction of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) in the early 1970’s offered researchers a non-radiometric immunoassay platform without compromising sensitivity. Over the last 50 years scientists have made huge strides in disease research and drug discovery and a demand for greater ...
