Adulteration of food is the process in which food impurities are added to our foods. This process is highly regulated by departments of the US Government and other Governments around the world. One area of concern for many, usually from a health, ethical or cultural standpoint, is the contamination of vegan and vegetarian foods with animal meats. Another area of concern is the presence of meat in vegetarian feed for livestock or poultry. In a recent study, 10% of vegetarian products tested contained traces of animal meats. The AlphaLISA kit present here quantifies the amount of Troponin I, a skeletal muscle protein that is highly conserved within mammalian species, in meat (raw or cooked) potentially present in food and feed products.
AlphaLISA technology allows the detection of molecules of interest in a no-wash, highly sensitive, quantitative assay. In an AlphaLISA assay, a biotinylated anti-analyte antibody binds to the Streptavidin-coated Donor beads while another anti-analyte antibody is conjugated to AlphaLISA Acceptor beads. In the presence of the analyte, the beads come into close proximity. The excitation of the Donor beads causes the release of singlet oxygen molecules that triggers a cascade of energy transfer in the Acceptor beads, resulting in a sharp peak of light emission at 615 nm.
