Crunch. Slurp. Gulp. These are the sounds of the countless people scarfing down their second helpings of food that could be filled with possibly hazardous contaminants. Unfortunately, contaminants are often lurking in our foods and products. So how can it be stopped? Manufacturers and importers can now quickly screen imported products at the source, before they enter the supply chain, hopefully preventing contaminants like mold or any adulterants from entering our food.

Welcome the Torion® T-9 GC/MS, the world’s first portable and lightweight gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer. What does this one of a kind GC/MS do? Well, in less than five minutes the Torion T-9 GC/MS can identify many contaminants in a product; saving time, money, and most importantly, improving the quality of products on our shelves that can impact the overall health of the public.

When PerkinElmer acquired Torion Technologies, Inc. in August of 2015 it gained a GC/MS that will revolutionize the way chemicals in products, or contaminants in food, are tested. Weighing in at around 30 pounds and using just one rechargeable battery, the Torion T-9 GC/MS tests samples onsite at a location. Eliminating the need to transport samples to and from a lab, the portable GC/MS prevents samples from possibly degrading during transport, ultimately providing fast, more accurate results right on the spot. So, if a container shipment fails testing run by a company’s risk management team, the shipment can be rejected long before the contaminated contents reach our docks…let alone our shelves. Saving time, money, and potential recalls.

There are many other applications for being able to test for compounds in the field. Sampling evidence onsite at a crime scene avoids damage to evidence that can occur during transport to a lab, thereby helping to preserve the integrity of the evidence. The Torion T-9 GC/MS can also be used to identify pollutants in the air of a newly gentrified city to be sure the air is safe to breathe. The Torion device may even be used to detect a certain compound on our breath that may be attributed to cancer…can you imagine? The capabilities of the game changing portable GC/MS continue to grow, but for now, at least it can prevent us being wary of our next bite, slurp or crunch.
