PerkinElmer’s QSight LC/MS/MS Improves Food Safety In China

China’s Xinjiang province has long served as the gateway between East and West. It is home to the legendary Silk Road, traversed by countless travelers over the ages in search of contacts beyond the expansive and rugged province that is nearly the size of Alaska.

As China’s largest producer of agricultural products and fruits, including prized Korla pears and Akesu apples, Xinjiang holds both great promise and challenges for the future. Provincial authorities want to expand Xinjiang’s agricultural export industry, but they realize they also must contend with its expansive size, remoteness, and the need to ensure the safety of Xinjiang’s agricultural products in order to compete in the global marketplace.

Enter PerkinElmer. As one of the only diagnostics, discovery, and analytical solutions companies with offices and personnel based in the city of Urumchi, Xinjiang, the company is working with provincial food and drug authorities to strengthen the province’s food safety detection capabilities. Recently, they agreed to deploy PerkinElmer’s QSight™ Triple Quad LC/MS/MS technology—a first for China—in three food detection centers in the Xinjiang cities of Akesu, Korla, and Kirghiz.

Chinese officials are particularly impressed by the QSight instrument’s solid and stable performance that requires only minimal maintenance. They also appreciate the ease of doing business with the company’s centrally–based office and service center.

Then there is the reputation of PerkinElmer itself. Xinjiang scientists already use PerkinElmer‘s Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AA) and Liquid Chromatography technologies, and they think highly of their reliability and capability. The addition of QSight technology will now further advance the province’s capabilities to analyze more – and more complex food samples with an instrument that requires virtually no maintenance. In the remote regions of Northeast China, things like reliable performance and dedicated local staff are huge advantages in helping to improve quality and food safety in the world’s most populous country.
