Microplastics

OF

From packaging, bags, and synthetic clothing to water bottles, cosmetics, and toothpaste, plastics and microplastics are everywhere and in everything – including our own bodies. Microplastics are becoming an issue of real environmental and societal concern globally, with increasing alarm about the amount of plastic materials floating in the world’s rivers, seas and oceans. But microplastics present another major problem, in that these polymer debris particles are small enough to be invisible to the naked eye, and they’re entering our river and marine environments – and ultimately into the food supply.

The impact of microplastic pollution is growing every day. And that is why many organizations worldwide are working to find solutions to this enormous problem, by characterizing and quantifying microplastics and their origins and impact on the environment and food chain.

Helping Move Microplastics Research Forward

To better identify and quantitate microplastics and the organic and bacterial pollutants hosted by them, or to measure the biological impact on the marine and freshwater ecosystem and the food chain, our complete range of innovative solutions, backed by more than 70 years’ experience in method development support, can help you obtain accurate and reliable results.

For your microplastics research needs, including identification of microplastics and associated pollutants, and eco-toxicological studies on marine bio-organisms together with genomic and proteomic effects, today you can partner with just one trusted, knowledgeable supplier: PerkinElmer.

Choose your research area of interest to learn more:

  • Identification and quantitation of polymers and additives: FT-IR, FT-IR microscopy, GC/MS (combined with thermal analysis or pyrolysis), ICP-MS (for identification of inorganic additives)
  • Identification and measurement of pollutants such as pesticides, concentrated by microplastics, and their impact on the marine and freshwater ecosystem and food chain: solid-phase extraction (SPE), HPLC, GC, and MS
  • Effects of microplastics on reproduction, growth, productivity, and immune response of bio-organisms in the marine and freshwater food chain: cellular and tissue imaging, multispectral assay technologies, gene sequencing, and proteomic tools

Polymer Identification, Characterization and Quantitation
Polymer Identification, Characterization and Quantitation

Polymer Identification, Characterization, and Quantitation in Water and Soil Samples

One of the principal analytical techniques for identifying polymers is infrared (IR) spectroscopy.

We deliver a family of advanced instruments, from the Spotlight 200i and Spotlight 400 IR imaging systems to the portable, fast, and easy-to-use Spectrum Two IR system, all outfitted with ready-made protocols, a materials library, and unique Spectrum Touch software. These are the instruments of choice for researchers involved in the identification and quantification of synthetic polymer microbeads, as well as for analyzing other compounds in water – everything from visible plastic to below-100 μm microplastics.

An important factor in identifying the source of a microplastic particle is the additives used to enhance polymer performance. A common technique is thermal analysis or pyrolysis, combined with GC/MS for high-sensitivity analysis of polymers and their organic additives (as well as characterization of particles below 100 μm). ICP-MS analysis is also used for identification and analysis of inorganic additives in the plastic.

Typical applications in microplastic particle characterization include:

  • Polymer identification and quantitation
  • Organic additive identification in polymers
  • Inorganic additive identification in polymers
Microplastics as a Habitat for Persistent Organic Pollutants and Bacteria
Microplastics as a Habitat for Persistent Organic Pollutants and Bacteria

Microplastics as a Habitat for Persistent Organic Pollutants and Bacteria

Microplastics can concentrate organic pollutants such as pesticides on the biofilms that build up on their surface. These pollutants are consumed by marine organisms, causing them harm, and are then passed up the food chain to our dinner tables. Chromatography and mass spectrometry allow identification and measurement of these pollutants, and automation of sample preparation steps, such as solid-phase extraction (SPE), can make the whole process more efficient. What is more, genomic techniques such as next-generation sequencing can be used to characterize bacteria attracted to the biofilm.

Typical applications include:

  • Contamination analysis
  • Identification and measurement of organic pollutants such as polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and other additives by GC/MS and LC/MS
  • Gene sequencing, including DNA fragment size quality control (QC) of bacterial genomes; automated library preparation of bacterial genomes; and automated nucleic acid extraction
Affect of Microplastics on Reproduction, Growth, Immune Response and Genetic Traits of Bio-organism
Affect of Microplastics on Reproduction, Growth, Immune Response and Genetic Traits of Bio-organism

How Microplastics Affect Reproduction, Growth, Immune Response, and Genetic Traits of Bio-organisms in the Food Chain

Concern is growing about the impact of microplastics on the marine and freshwater ecosystem, and in particular the effect on the food chain. In addition to leaching harmful additives, microplastics generate a surface biofilm that concentrates organic pollutants such as pesticides and attracts potentially harmful bacteria. This biota is consumed by marine organisms with potentially harmful consequences for the organisms themselves, the food chain, and human health. Issues such as how microplastics affect reproduction, growth, and productivity of bio-organisms, and how changes in immune response can lead to increased susceptibility to infection, are critically important, as they can lead to disruption in the food chain. In terms of physical harm, there is evidence of tiny particles penetrating into tissue, or into the brain, causing behavioral changes. Such research demands cellular imaging and assay technologies, gene sequencing, and proteomic tools.

Typical applications include:

  • Biochemical and cellular assays for cellular stress and inflammation, oxidative stress, cytotoxicity, cell viability, and hormone analysis
  • Kinase assays, including extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK), p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase, and C-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) for reactive oxygen species (ROS) studies
  • High-content cellular imaging for cell invasion, uptake, and localization studies
  • Vectra® Polaris automated multispectral immunohistochemistry (IHC) tissue imaging applications for localization and analysis of tiny particles embedded within tissue and cells
  • inForm® software for recognition, characterization, and size calculation of microplastic particles in tissue
  • In vivo multispectral imaging for tracking infection and immune response in live fish and crustaceans
  • MicroCT imaging for particle localization in vivo
  • Sequencing of biofilm bacteria, including automated library preparation; automated nucleic acid extraction using chemagen magnetic bead technology; LabChip® microfluidic separation of DNA (versus agarose gels) for size QC prior to next-generation sequencing (NGS) applications; microfluidic separation for protein analysis (versus sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis [SDS-PAGE] techniques)
  • AlphaScreen® technology for study of protein-protein interaction
  • Oxidative stress via ERK, p38 kinase, and JNK analysis with AlphaScreen, AlphaLISA® (homogenous ELISA assays), and DELFIA® technologies
  • Next-generation sequencing of biofilm bacterial genomes with JANUS® G3R NGS Express Workstation, Sciclone® G3 NGS/NGSx Workstation, Zephyr® G3 NGS Workstation, chemagic 360 and chemagic Prepito® nucleic acid extraction systems, and NEXTflex family of library preparation kits (for whole genome sequencing, small ribose nucleic acid [RNA] sequencing, target enrichment, custom amplicon panels, and DNA isolation)
  • Nanoparticle analysis
