    Ozone Precursor System

    The analysis of C2 to C12 volatile organic ozone-precursor compounds can present a serious technical challenge to the analytical chemist. Low concentrations in the atmosphere coupled with the need to monitor frequently to assess diurnal variations means that a preconcentration step of the sample before analysis by thermal desorption is required. While the samples can be collected in the field and returned to the laboratory, remote, field-based analysis is desired which allows reduced data turnaround time, minimizes sample collection hardware and permits the presence or absence of VOCs to be correlated with meteorological data. In the field, low-molecular-weight C2 VOCs can be trapped on solid adsorbents if those adsorbents are cryogenically cooled.

    In the mining industry, one of the great challenges is knowing where to dig. An area must be mapped for element(s) of interest. This is typically accomplished by drilling exploratory holes in a specific pattern, with the ore being qualitatively collected from each drill hole and analyzed for the desired elements. As a result, many samples are generated which must be analyzed to determine the viability of digging. This work discusses the analysis of copper ore samples from various drill patterns to meet these requirements.

    Cavity-enhanced Absorption Spectroscopy for Trace Gas Detection with Frontier

    Cavity-enhanced absorption spectroscopy (CEAS) has similarities with the better known cavity ringdown technique (CRDS) which measures the signal decay as a laser pulse emerges through one of the mirrors after successive reflections. By measuring the increase in the rate of decay caused by an absorbing species, CRDS can measure ppb concentrations of small molecules. The ringdown technique has typically been applied to small molecules where the wavelength of a NIR laser source can be tuned across very narrow individual lines of the spectra. In contrast this report describes CEAS using a broadband source applied to larger molecules where the spectra are broader.

    With heavy machinery, it is important to assess its status during operation to prevent breakdowns and costly repairs. A key aspect is monitoring the status of the oil or lubricants used to lubricate various components such as engines, transmissions, gearboxes and many other important areas: if the oil degrades too much or becomes highly contaminated, it can damage various components. Because of its importance, ASTM created a method for the analysis of in-service oils: method D5185.

    Learn how a phenotypic screening assay to study time-dependent effects of endothelin-1-induced hypertrophy was set up using human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC)-derived cardiomyocytes. Learn how: The Opera Phenix system has been applied in the field of neurodegenerative diseases. In this assay, the Opera Phenix system is 4 times faster than the previous Opera® system. Primary neuron morphology is analyzed in a straightforward approach using Harmony software. Careful assay optimization can increase throughput, and minimize the data burden, without compromising assay performance.
