The Power of the Sun, Solar Energy Development Solutions

As the demand for solar power continues to grow, there needs to be a clear focus on different key issues in the life cycle of a solar cell. These issues are: efficiency, durability and cost. Coupling PerkinElmer’s application knowledge and experience together with our product portfolio, we can help manufacturers overcome these obstacles. At PerkinElmer, we’re taking action to ensure the quality of our environment.

Safeguarding the Authenticity of Herbs & Spices

Infrared (IR) and near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy are fast, easy-to-use techniques with a history of being used for food applications such as those for measuring protein, moisture, and fat content. Food fraud and adulteration has become of particular concern to the industry over the past few years following reports of incidents in the media, with herbs and spices identified as one of the key problem areas.

Weighing the Benefits and Risks of Nanotechnology White Paper

There is a growing body of evidence showing that there are significant differences between some nanomaterials and their non-nanoscale counterparts. What those differences portend raises many new questions about their potential to cause harm to human health and the environment.

The Analysis of Precious Metals in Mining with the PinAAcle 500

When mining for precious metals, ores are extracted from the ground and subjected to various sample preparation procedures in order to remove the metals of interest. A commonly used procedure to isolate metals from the ore is fire-assay, which leaves a matrix-free “button” of the metal. This work will focus on the analysis of precious metals in simulated digested precious metal buttons, with an added emphasis on assessing the lowest limits which can be accurately measured.

Analysis of In-Service Oils Following ASTM D5185 with the Avio 200 ICP-OES

With heavy machinery, it is important to assess its status during operation to prevent breakdowns and costly repairs. A key aspect is monitoring the status of the oil or lubricants used to lubricate various components such as engines, transmissions, gearboxes and many other important areas: if the oil degrades too much or becomes highly contaminated, it can damage various components. Because of its importance, ASTM created a method for the analysis of in-service oils: method D5185.

Augmenting Standard Methods of Measuring Airborne PM2.5 Using IR Imaging

The use of IR imaging expands the measurement possibilities by giving information about the individual types of materials present in the collected particles. The information from the IR imaging experiment is not only qualitative (i.e. identification of the particulates), but can also be calibrated to give quantitative information on the components present. The IR imaging measurement will take only five minutes, whereas Ion Chromatography requires solvent extraction of the particulates and would take around 20-25 minutes per sample

Using MSF to Resolve Difficult Interferences in Metallurgical Samples with the Avio 500 ICP-OES

The analysis of trace metals in metallurgical matrices also presents a challenge for ICP-OES: spectral interferences. Many elements have a large number of emission lines (i.e. approximately 20,000 for iron), which increases the potential for spectral interferences. This effect is compounded in metallurgical samples, where the matrix element(s) are present at high levels due to the minimal dilutions used.

Water Analysis Using LAMBDA UV-Visible Spectrophotometers: Chemical Oxygen Demand Determination

Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) is used as an indirect measurement of the sum of oxidizable matter in water and measures the equivalent amount of oxygen required to oxidize organic compounds. Wastewater commonly contains organic compounds, as a result of industrial processes, which can oxidise in the presence of dissolved oxygen in the water. Low levels of dissolved oxygen can be detrimental to aquatic life but high levels may cause corrosion of metal pipes. It is important to use COD as an indicator of water quality. In this application, quantitative analysis of COD was performed using the LAMBDA 265TM UV-Vis spectrophotometer and Merck Spectroquant® COD mercury free cell test.

Determination of Oil Content in Membranes Used in Compressed Air Sampling by Infrared Spectroscopy

This note describes the test method for the quantitative analysis of aerosol oil and liquid oil typically present in the air discharged from compressors and compressed air systems. The method is rapid, sensitive and cost effective and shows the FT-IR can be an effective tool for the monitoring of oil content. The methodology followed for the analysis by FT-IR is reported in Bureau of Indian Standard and we have also tested for its ruggedness, spike recovery, linearity and detection limits.

Trace Metals in Waters by GFAAS, in Accordance with U.S. EPA and Health Canada Requirements

Precise and accurate measurements at the regulated levels are an important factor for assuring safe drinking water. U.S. EPA Method 200.91 is the method cited by EPA, Health Canada, and the WHO for the use of graphite furnace atomic absorption spectroscopy (GFAAS). In evaluating a GFAAS system for determination of these elements, it must provide good sensitivity, low noise, limited drift, and accuracy in matrices with high salt content (hard water) that might be found in drinking waters. In this work, the PinAAcle™ 900T, with a unique optical system, is evaluated for the use of EPA Method 200.9 for As, Cd, Pb, Se, and Tl in drinking waters.

Biodiesel Concentration Measurements Using Attenuated Total Reflectance (ATR)

Biodiesel fuels are often blended compositions of diesel fuel and esterified soybean oils, rapeseed oils, or other potential vegetable oils as well as fats. The physical and combustion properties of these biofuels have allowed them to achieve similar performance to diesel fuel. However, there are several characteristics that are of concern. These differences, especially the cetane reduction, require that adequate control of the biofuel concentration be implemented.

Meeting the Challenges of Soil Analysis with the Avio 200 ICP-OES

The analysis of soils for elemental contents presents challenges during the sample preparation step. A common method for preparing a soil sample for inorganic elemental analysis involves digesting the soil sample in an acid that is heated to near-boiling to extract the elements for analysis. When using open vessels in heating blocks, this extraction method typically takes four hours or more to complete. The sample must then be centrifuged or filtered to remove solid particles prior to analysis. The use of a microwave digestion system can speed this up significantly by completing the acid digestion in less than 50 minutes.
