Escitalopram is a furancarbonitrile that is one of the Serotonin uptake inhibitors used as an antidepressant. Escitalopram is in a class of antidepressants called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Escitalopram is noted for its high selectivity with serotonin reuptake inhibition. Escitalopram (S-citalopram) is the most selective SSRI available, whereas the other enantiomer, R-citalopram, is approximately 30–40 times less potent than the S-enantiomer.
