Carnitine is a quanternary ammonium compound involved in metabolism and fatty acid transport across mitochondrial membranes and has been shown to help regulate fatty acid β oxidation. Carnitine deficiency genetic disorders are associated with cariomyopathy, skeletal muscle weakness, hypoglycermia, and malnutrition. L-[methyl-3H] carnitine is used in carnitine uptake assays and carnitine exchange studies.
