Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor C (VEGFC) is part of the VEGF family of dimeric proteins that are important regulators of physiological and pathological vasculogenesis, angiogenesis, and lymphangiogenesis. Fully processed VEGFC contains 116 amino acid residues and is a glycoprotein. VEGFC is expressed in many tissues and exerts its effect through two endothelial receptor tyrosine kinases (VEGFR2 and VEGFR3), which play a pivotal role in regulation of endothelial cell growth and differentiation. VEGFC is one of the most potent lymphangiogenic members of the VEGF family and causes enhanced metastasis to regional lymph nodes and to the lungs in breast cancer. VEGFC seems to be a useful serum biomarker in the prognosis of certain cancers.

AlphaLISA technology allows the detection of molecules of interest in a no-wash, highly sensitive, quantitative assay. In an AlphaLISA assay, a biotinylated anti-analyte antibody binds to the Streptavidin-coated Donor beads while another anti-analyte antibody is conjugated to AlphaLISA Acceptor beads. In the presence of the analyte, the beads come into close proximity. The excitation of the Donor beads causes the release of singlet oxygen molecules that triggers a cascade of energy transfer in the Acceptor beads, resulting in a sharp peak of light emission at 615 nm.
