Automated PCR Setup using the JANUS Forensic Workstation

The JANUS® Forensic Workstation with PCR Setup configuration is a simple automation platform that can carry out a wide variety of fully or semi-automated forensic PCR setup applications including multiplexed small tandem repeat (STR) typing assays and real-time quantitative PCR (QPCR) reactions. Our family of automated liquid handling workstations can easily adapt to a variety of throughput needs and formats including, micro tubes, 96- and 384-well microplate formats. The workstation can also automate a variety of other PCR protocols including those used for cycle sequencing, SNP analysis and DNA sequencing plate setup for capillary sequencers commonly used in forensic laboratories.
The JANUS automated liquid handling workstation can enable:
- Forensic STR Typing Setup using ABI Profiler Plus, Identifiler, Y-filer and Minifiler Kits
- Forensic STR Typing Setup using Promega Powerplex 16 and Powerplex Y kits
- Taqman-based PCR Genotyping Assays
- Real Time Analysis
- SNP Analysis
- Cycle Sequencing Reaction Setup
- DNA Sequence Plate Setup - for loading onto capillary electrophoresis (CE) sequencer (e.g., ABI 3130 system)
- PCR Cleanup
Get the benefits:
- Fully automated walk-away forensic PCR setup for STR genotyping provides consistent, reliable downstream analysis with no cross-contamination
- Carry out PCR setup in Amp tubes or PCR plates
- High throughput processing increases throughput 10 times over manual processes. The 96-tip MDT arm is available for higher throughput needs
- Filter barrier tips minimize the risk of cross contamination during all PCR setup steps.
- Accusense™ features independent liquid level sensing for each tip for optimal precision and minimal sample carry-over
Recommended JANUS system configurations:
PCR Setup
- JANUS Mini, Standard or Expanded Platform with Varispan™ (4- or 8-Tip) Arm
- VersaTip™ Plus
- Low Volume Disposable Tip
Combined DNA Isolation, PCR Setup & PCR Cleanup
- Same configuration as for DNA Isolation
- Low Volume Disposable Tip
Additional considerations: The DNA Isolation configuration is needed for fully automated PCR cleanup procedures using either magnetic bead- or filtration-based methodology.
