There is an old proverb that says “good things come in small packages.” PerkinElmer, a global leader in human and environmental health, must be listening. To further solidify its position as the world’s leading producer of ICP-OES (inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry) instruments, the company recently unveiled the Avio™ 200 ICP-OES. It is the smallest and most value-packed multi-elemental ICP-OES analyzer in the industry.
Sure, its smaller footprint frees up much-needed bench space in laboratories. But, the Avio 200 instrument’s many innovations and power-packed performance across the environmental, food, industrial and pharmaceutical landscape are what have the science community talking. 1
How about this for an ideal checklist of features: The new Avio 200 ICP-OES is easy to use and offers a load and lock torch system as well as Syngistix™ cross-platform software that makes multi-element analysis as quick and simple as single-element flame atomic absorption (AA). These features also provide support for a variety of peripherals, including online auto-dilution systems, laser ablation, flow injection, and field flow fractionation.
On the productivity front, the Avio 200 ICP-OES has a fourth generation 40 MHz, free-running, solid state RF generator that provides an efficiency rate of more than 81%. Its patented Flat Plate™ Plasma technology generates robust, matrix-tolerant plasma using half of the argon of conventional systems. That alone accounts for a huge savings. Equally impressive, however, is the Avio 200 instrument’s startup time – about 10 minutes from a cold start. Compare that to two hours or more for other systems. That makes the new Avio 200 instrument ideal for labs wanting to power down—and reduce costs—when not running samples.
Removing the plasma torch is also a snap. What once took 10 steps with conventional units now takes two with the Avio 200 ICP-OES … and no tools are needed. Maintenance is also easy. The instrument features PlasmaShear™ technology, which virtually eliminates costly and time-consuming maintenance by running on air. With no need for ionization suppressants or high-maintenance, high-extraction systems or cones, the Avio 200 ICP-OES provides superior uptime and, sample accuracy, and minimal maintenance. 2
The Avio 200 instrument also features the popular PlasmaCam™ viewing camera. In combination with Syngistix software, the PlasmaCam camera helps simplify method development and troubleshooting by more than half using preset methods. Because the instrument also offers the Dynamic Wavelength Stabilization™ (DWS) algorithm, the Avio 200 ICP-OES allows direct on-peak measurements and fewer reruns instead of time-consuming peak-search methods used in other sequential ICP systems. 3
Despite its small size and powerful new features that set a new standard in ICP-OES technology, it is the Avio 200 instrument’s vertical torch that places it in a class by itself. With its patented computer-controlled dual view capabilities, the Avio 200 ICP-OES provides users with plasma viewing in both the vertical and horizontal planes.
Aristotle once said that “The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.” He could well be describing the new Avio 200 ICP-OES. The system’s “bests” – lowest total argon consumption (only 9 L/min), fastest startup time (10 minutes from power on), superior sensitivity and resolution, and the widest linear range – all come in an amazingly small footprint.
“With industry regulations becoming more complex and driving testing for more elements, lab professionals find themselves challenged with managing the associated higher sample volume and time-consuming analyses,” Jon DiVincenzo, President of Environmental Health at PerkinElmer, says. “The Avio 200 ICP-OES is engineered to help our customers run multi-elemental analyses reliably and efficiently across the spectrum of food safety, industrial and environmental applications for better health outcomes.”
