Technologies for Lab Automation

PerkinElmer Automated Liquid Handling Solutions are built with technologies for precision and throughput that you can depend on.

MDT-Modular Dispense Technology

Gain the power of dispensing precision with our Modular Dispense Technology™ (MDT) Incorporating our Modular Dispense Technology into your JANUS Automated Workstation delivers real-time and future adaptability in throughput, capacity, and dynamic volume range without ever compromising your performance, methodology or protocols. MDT provides hands off, "on the fly" adaptability in volume range and microplate densities for up to 1536-well plates. The dispense heads can be automatically changed within a single protocol, changing from nanoliters to microliters in seconds or from a 96- to 384-tip configuration with no user intervention. Our modular design ensures optimal performance by allowing you to select the right dispensing tools for the exact volume you need dispensed. In addition, our low volume head is designed for nanoliter dispensing but can easily be changed for a larger volume head for buffer or diluents additions. Precision dispensing is now easier than ever - scalable, flexible, and adaptable. To learn more, contact us.

Varispan™

Want more precision and throughput? No problem, enter the Varispan™ Pipette Arm An integral part of our automated workstations is the Varispan arm which offers a selection of additional tip choices and syringe sizes (available in 250 µl, 500 µl, 1,000 µl, 2,500 µl and 5,000 µl.) for optimal performance. The Varispan arm is available in a 4-or 8-tip configuration to ensure precision liquid handling for all protocols requiring assay automation. Liquid transfers can be performed in a multi-tip mode from any combination of laboratory containers including test tubes, vials, troughs, deep-well plates and microplates (up to 384-well formats) for complete and flexible assay automation. In addition, the Varispan arm offers exceptional dispensing accuracy through an independent fluid path which provides unique volume transfers through each tip. Adding an additional arm to create a two-arm workstation can achieve even greater throughput and flexibility and increase your overall laboratory automation. Optimize the pipetting performance via the automatic use of performance files containing information such as volume specific aspirate and dispense pump speeds, air gaps, liquid delays, waste and blowout volumes. User-defined performance files can be added to the library. The Varispan arm offers excellent pipetting performance including:

  • 5 µl < 2.0% C.V. (20 µl disposable tips, distilled water, 500 µl syringe).
  • 50 µl < 1% C.V. (fixed tips, distilled water, 500 µl syringe).

VersaTip

Get more versatility with VersaTip® Adding the VersaTip option to your Varispan arm delivers even greater versatility in your automated handling applications and protocols. The VersaTip can be used as a washable fixed tip probe or be used as a disposable tip adapter. When used as a fixed tip, the PTFE® coated probe may be washed after pipetting operations, or the tip can automatically be used as a disposable tip adapter using a selection of disposable tips with volume ranges of 0.5 µL to 1 mL. Pipetting accuracy and precision of automated liquid handling systems is essential for data quality and integrity. To learn more, contact us.

Plate Movement (Labware Movement)

Plate movement also known as labware movement modules are represented by the three different types of gripper arms on the JANUS platform; enabling complete assay automation by linking pipetting tools with labware movement both within the JANUS deck or into externally located ancillary devices such as readers, washers, incubators or other application enhancing devices. WinPREP®

Easy to use - Easy to Automate. WinPREP Applications Software for JANUS Automated Workstations For use with all JANUS Automated Workstations, our WinPREP applications software is compatible with the Windows® XP operating system and provides user friendly pull-down menus and simple user prompts. Most standard tests are created easily by performing just three basic steps:

  1. Placing labware on the deck
  2. Creating supporting procedures
  3. And, linking the labware to procedure operation steps

Additional features include:

  • User friendly protocols and templates: Standard default protocols and custom programming options are available to ensure optimal pipetting operations, reagent dispensing, liquid transfers, and dilution capabilities.
  • Reporting tools and data repository: Track all errors and processing, access standard labware definitions and add additional ones as needed, test and store protocols, create worklists for selective test processing.
  • Robotic compatibility: Eliminate user interactions by embedding custom scripts in test protocols to handle runtime errors and assembly changes.
  • User diagnostics and security: Analyze performance parameters including accuracy and precision performance of each syringe pump, liquid level sensing capabilities, alignment of tips, verification of disposable tip pickup and removal, and flushing operations. Multiple levels of security can be applied.
